Ah, but still, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

It's pretty grim that you can descend into the doc directory and be
greeted with nothing that gives you any idea about what to do
next. A reader's most likely hit with, "There are lots of files here,
so they must be trying to teach me _something_, but...".

This is one of the reasons I'd like to start using something like
AsciiDoc---so that one could descend into cairo/doc and then just
start reading. And since AsciiDoc+ikiwiki integration exists we should
be able to maintain that online at the same time. And we'll be able to
build man pages, PDF, HTML etc. from that. But the current situation
where the user is _required_ to build something before they can even
start reading is just plain cruel and unfair.
