[cairo] Maximum coordinates

I'm wondering what the maximum coordinates are that one can pass to 
cairo_move_to and cairo_line_to.

I have the effect that some lines are not drawn at all if the coordinates 
are rather large (i.e. in the range of >50000).

Does anybody know if there is a limit, which limit there is and why it is 
there?
