Yeah, I suspect they don't like having different bit-depths for each
component (easy to get chroma errors that way).  It also doesn't make
full use of a typical small 6-bpc LCD panel.  Both of those are good "in
theory" arguments against RGB565.

For some reason, 12 and 16-bit paletted modes never really caught on
either.  ;-)

In the real world, anyone who doesn't already have a decent accelerator
(rendering pixman mostly irrelevant) is probably running on limited
hardware, where 16 bpp can be a real performance and memory advantage.
