[cairo] problem painting 0 into 1-bit surfaces

Hello, I'm having trouble painting a value of 0 into a 1-bit surface
with recent versions of Cairo.  Code illustrating the problem is

I'm running the following version of cairo:
libcairo2/maverick uptodate 1.10.0-1ubuntu2

This used to work with 1.8.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this a cairo bug?
