More news on this: a colleague reports that if you reconfigure the terminal to
use 16-bit colour instead of 8-bit then the problem goes away.

However this is an unhelpful solution for us: we switched the terminals to 8-bit
because firefox frequently crashed when visiting graphics-intensive sites.
