Latest Ubuntu says version 1.14.6-1 

cairo-xlib-surface-shm.c:619 should check for NULL and return an error code.


Gnome Image Viewer is asserting (and then stopping) 3.18.2
because of this code.
Best practice is to check and return an error code so application can handle
their issue (that they are calling your API with NULL)
