In sifting through pending cairo submissions, I found this end of a
thread from last December.

You had a patch which would help cairo compile with an older Xrender
library provided without a .pc file. The email with the patch can be
seen:

(Ugh. That page has a base64-encoded version. I can repost the patch
if anyone needs it.)

I don't want to add the patch as is, since it potentially gives
preference to old versions of Xrender. If someone can fix it as
described above and test it, then I would be glad to commit it, (or,
hand out commit access as necessary).
