We should probably have a fall-back that does generate embedded fonts
from plain outline data; that can be used to construct postscript for
interpreters without Type42 support as well as to accept as-yet-unknown
font formats from FreeType.
Oh, and subsetting is often a good way to ensure that font licenses are
respected; I've abstracted more than one font from PDF files where the
PDF generator embedded the entire font against the intent of the font
license (mmm, Minion).
