I do not see why one would want to fall back to FSAA when all the
information to properly do pixel based coverage (like pixman does),
is available. There must be a way to do this properly, which is
high-performant as well with current hardware?

Note that pixman seems to use a box filter still, so for certain
display types it could even be enhanced using a tent or gaussian
filter instead.

For things like user interfaces, I would consider FSAA out of the
question.
