[cairo] Problems with win32 display in version 1.4?

Is there any obvious reason why cairo output would appear in a win32 app only when using v. 1.2.6 .dlls or below?  The app runs with 1.4.0 & 1.4.6 dlls (status functions return success, etc, no missing symbols) but the cairo functions display nothing.  The app was built using 1.4.0 libs.
