That's an argument for making things work to some extent on every
server. It's not an argument for trying to make things look perfect
on every server.

How many "cairo doesn't work on 8-bit visuals" bugs were we getting?
How many "cairo looks awful on 8-bit visuals" bugs are we getting now?

I think it's fine to advocate people upgrading to a new server to get
better looking gradients.

But more particularly, I think it's important to fix it in the right
place *first*, and only then think about workarounds.
