[cairo] Hebrew, Cyrillic

Hello!

For some reason I want cairo-1.6.4 to write Hebrew and Cyrillic letters.
But a very simple program with:

 	cairo_t *cr;
 		...
 	cairo_new_path(cr);
 	cairo_select_font_face(cr, "Times", CAIRO_FONT_SLANT_NORMAL, CAIRO_FONT_WEIGHT_NORMAL);
 	cairo_set_font_size(cr, 20.0);
 	cairo_move_to(cr, 80, 200+40);
 	cairo_show_text(cr, "פעילות");
 	cairo_stroke (cr);
 	cairo_new_path(cr);
 	cairo_select_font_face(cr, "Times", CAIRO_FONT_SLANT_NORMAL, CAIRO_FONT_WEIGHT_NORMAL);
 	cairo_set_font_size(cr, 20.0);
 	cairo_move_to(cr, 80, 200+60);
 	cairo_show_text(cr, "Хěвел");
 	cairo_stroke (cr);
 	     ....

shows only 2 lines of empty boxes. Ok, I have a Gentoo system here and
thus, I tried a scientific Linux and Voila: I see at least the Cyrillic
line correct. The Hebrew remains a sequence of empty boxes.

Ok, something is wrong with my Gentoo system. Perhaps you know, Gentoo
compiles all from source. So I tried to change the system parameters:

    (USE = " ... unicode nls ...")
    (nl_NL UTF-8
     he_IL UTF-8 in /etc/locale.gen then "locale-gen")

I re-compiled "pango" and "cairo". Nothing helps. I see neither the
Cyrillic nor the Hebrew line.

Please give me a hint: What sould I re-compile. Which package Cairo
takes the letters from ? Is it X11/Xorg ?

Note: Putting Hebrew letters into a Gtk-Entry-Widget works! Even more:
The Gtk-Entry-Widget writes the words form right to left as soon as it
remarks Hebrew characters. So my system cannot be totally wrong.

               Thank you in advance.
