Following your suggestions, I split the patch into the 3 attachments.
Hopefully the new commit comments should now be more explanatory.
If possible, please review my older patches, as they might suffer from
similar problems as the one I posted in this thread even if I tried to
keep true changes separate from simple code refactoring.
Please let me know if there's anything else I should do to improve
these (or my previous) patches as I'm willing to do so.
I might be unable to reply for the next few days as tomorrow I'll go
on holiday and I won't have Internet access, but I'll check my mailbox
as soon as I get back.

(In the meantime I'll work on radial gradients, which appear to be
broken in quartz right now. no Internet access, but my local
repository will come with me)
