[cairo] Awful PDF output from Evince

I updated to poppler master.  That fixed the print issue, but then evince 
renders those Type3 fonts unreadably distorted and pixelated.  Have not 
debugged it yet.

Independently, it probably makes sense to merge nearby fallback areas...
