[cairo] test suite failures on OS X

Hello,
I'm working with cairo 1.8.8 on OS X (10.5.7, intel processor), and when I
run 'make check' after building, many (but not all, and not even the
majority) of the tests fail, and some even crash.  I've searched google and
bugs.freedesktop.org for anyone experiencing similar failures, but there
doesn't seem to be any mention of anything like this.
Is this a known issue?  Or is there more likely something wrong with my
setup?  (And if so, any pointers on how to figure out what that would be?)
