[cairo] How to test the gl backend?

Hi dudes... I'm the author of the murrine gtk+ engine and maintaner of
gtk-engines for gnome.
I would like to start testing the gl backend and see if I could write
a development snapshot of a gtk+ engine that uses this backend.
Since there's no documentation, how can I do this? does it support the
same api of the xlib backend (with full support for patterns, lines
etc etc).
