The pango-profile module in GNOME git has all the translated strings for GNOME
in all the different languages we support. That's a great sample of real
world test cases. What it misses though is user / document strings, which
happen to be much longer than UI strings.
Toy text API is useless with Arabic, Hebew, and Indic family of scripts
though, keep that in mind if using that to drive optimizations.

PS. Regarding making toy text API more useful, it's possible to get fairly
usable complex text rendering with just cairo and harfbuzz (and FriBidi for
bidi), so some kind of integration is in my long-term todo.
