I don't think Marco is the first to want to use them. Every couple
months somebody asks if we can do them. I know I was asking a year or
so ago. Maybe two now. I was not the only person. The party line has
always been that if we could do mesh gradients, then you don't really
need conical gradient APIs per se, you just make a function that sets
up a conical mesh. That said, no one's stepped forward to really do
mesh gradients yet, so we're left hanging on both (apologies if
someone's been madly pushing mesh gradient work, and I've missed that
particular contribution).
