[cairo] Newbie Help

If you could elaborate that might help us understand where you're
getting stuck.  E.g. error messages, etc.

The only problem I ran into myself was that 12.04 had an old version of
pixman.  So make sure you have pixman 0.30.2 installed.  That wasn't
shipped with 12.04 originally, but it's been backported to ubuntu 12.04
since December, so it really shouldn't be a problem anymore if you're
system's fully up to date.
