[cairo] cairo maintenance status

Hi-

There seem to be a lot of messages about the state of various
backends being maintained or ignored.  And some Gnome people
seem to complain a lot about Cairo.
But, as far as I can tell, as one subscribed to the mailing
lists and one who uses Cairo in hobby projects, the
project seems to be functioning acceptably.

Is there an actual problem?  Does Cairo need more help?
If so, what kind of help?
