This is on NetBSD/i386 3.1. I built cairo from pkgsrc. This worked fine before
I built 1.4.2, but I don't remember what my last cairo version was.

The X server is vncserver. I have to use vncserver, it's a headless server. I'd
rather not increase the color depth.

I see many related problems, but none on this high a level, and there really
isn't much I can find for a specific fix or workaround.

I can't run any programs which depend on cairo. That's a lot of them.
