thanks.  I'll direct further questions to the mailing list.  FWIW, here is a
link to the patch currently used by NetBSD pkgsrc:

It seems to work alright for me with a Sun ultra/10 display (8 bit psuedo
color) and we have not been hearing complaints from other users with more
modern displays.  Since cairo affects much of gnome as well as
firefox/thunderbird/etc it is reasonably safe to assume that the attached patch
has received a fair amount of road testing.
