I agree that git is a great choice.  But do be sure to use git://
rather than http:// or rsync:// for cloning/pulling.  As someone
who tracks Linus' kernel tree, I can attest that it is more than
just significantly faster for pulls, and even works well across
a modem or cell.  

Running git-repack -d && git-prune-packed is also helpful.

The git-daemon *can* add a noticeable load to the server, depending
on how many track the repositories, but it is worth it.
