You are trying to compile latest cairo on 6-year-old Linux machine, I assume.
It is a not a wise thing to do.

The easiest thing you can do is install a newer Linux distribution
like CentOS, Ubuntu,
or Fedora. And then install cairo.

"./configure --help" lists them.

The author of Xrender[1] is in this mailing list, hope he or someone who has a
deeper understanding will explain.
