I tried that, but it didn't work out -
so I spent the last two hours going through the commit history trying
to pinpoint the offending (breaking) commit. And I did find it:

The revision previous to this commit works fine. With this patch
applied, it starts to break as described by me and Tim earlier.
Unfortunately the patch moves around quite a bit of code - more than I
can put into context with my limited insight into Cairo's internals.
So I'm hoping Chris Wilson or someone else from the dev team will read
this. I'm humbly asking for some way to get the necessary information
to fix or help fix this.
