[cairo] SVG & PS/EPS surfaces

Why first SVG, and then painting to PS? Maybe that is the problem. There
is a PDF example at http://zetcode.com/gfx/cairo/cairobackends/ -- I
think PS is very similar. Do you really still need PS for your LaTeX?
PDF import should work, at least for pdflatex.
