A lot of the changes did indeed apply cleanly to 1.12, but I ran into
a gtk-doc glitch when dry running the publish script in generating the
html.  Looks like something involved in the skia backend.  I didn't want
to spend a lot of time on 1.12 so bagged it at that point.
