More info: in the ui library project, the "O" label was an overprint of 
a scaled GdkPixbuf.
A small artifact of a dash at the bottom right of the pixbuf appeared, 
along with the button
artifact. That sequence was different in that draw pixbuf, draw text, 
draw separate button.
